My life so far

Hi, I’m Albert Mendez. I was born May 24, 1988 in Oxnard Ca. I am the middle child to an older sister and a younger brother. My siblings and I were raised by a single mother who worked three jobs to support her children. When I was entering middle school my mom informed my siblings and I we were moving to Houston Texas. My sister and I refused to move with my mom and stayed in California with my grandma, throughout the years I went back and forth from Texas and California visiting my mom. In 2006, I graduated from Saint Bonaventure high school.

I am currently 26 years old and I work at Casa Pacifica. Casa Pacifica is a treatment center for abused, neglected and at risk children. I have been working at Casa Pacifica for about two and a half years.  I’m currently an assistant supervisor, working with level 14 males between the ages of 11 and 18 years of age. Aside from working full time, I am also enrolled in school full time. My days are long and stressful but also rewarding and I accomplish a lot.

I plan on graduating from Oxnard College and transferring to a University, preferably Cal State University Channel Islands. I want to get my degree in Sociology and continue working with at risk children. A future goal of mine is to either open up my own group home or work as a corrections officer.

  2. Working a full-time job and attending school as a full-time student must be rough. I’m sure that with determination and consistency you will achieve your goal. It’s great to see that you’re giving back to those unfortunate and changing lives in the process. Keep up the good work!

  6. You and I have some commonalities. I, too, was raised by a single mom, and also a middle child with two siblings. What is even more crazy, is you were born almost exactly a moth ahead. I arrived on the 22nd of June. Good to see you're still trucking through school.

  7. It’s great you devote your time with the kids. You have a big heart and the kids can see that. Even though you have a busy schedule! Keep your head up and just take one day at a time. In the end it will be worth it.
